If you’ve done some research on diamonds, you have probably heard of the 4 C’s: color, cut, carat, and clarity. Cut is one of the most important aspects of a diamond. It is responsible for the sparkle, shine, and overall wow factor that makes diamonds so popular! Read below to discover what it truly means.
Cut or Cut?
There are actually two types of cuts when referring to a diamond. First, there’s that which determines a diamond’s shape. For example, round brilliant, princess, and oval are different "cuts" that reflect different diamond shapes. When deciding on the shape of a diamond, it’s all a matter of personal preference. The other type is more technical. It refers to the proportions, finish, symmetry, and polish of a diamond, all of which are determined by the science behind cutting diamonds. This is the type we will be talking about.
What makes cut so special? Well, it's is what turns rough diamonds mined from the Earth into the beautiful gems you see in jewelry every day. The cut grade refers to the symmetry and proportions meaning length, width, and depth. It also refers to how a diamond is finished and polished to enhance the way light reacts with the stone. All of these are responsible for how well a diamond sparkles and shines.
A diamond with an excellent cut grade will display the maximum amount of brilliance and sparkle because the facets, surfaces on the geometric shape of the diamond, capture light and reflect it around perfectly. On the other hand, a diamond that is not cut well will look lifeless and dull because the light entering the diamond does not reflect the same way. Picture two diamonds side by side, they both are the same carat weight, color, and clarity, but one has an excellent cut grade and one has a poor cut grade. These two diamonds will look completely different. Why? Because the poor cut diamond does not have any sparkle or life to it whereas the excellent cut diamond will have pizzazz and fire.
Poorly cut diamonds are disproportional and may have a tall and skinny, or a short and wide shape. In these diamonds, the light enters through the top and exits out the bottom giving them a dull appearance. With an excellent cut diamond, the light enters the top, bounces around the facets and reflects back through the top of the diamond to exhibit maximum brilliance and fire.
The majority of loose diamonds sold today are certified by a gemological lab such as GIA, EGL, or IGI. A round brilliant diamond will receive a cut grade that is printed on the diamond certificate provided by the lab.
